This past weekend I spent some time at Natural Products Expo which took place at the Anaheim Convention Center. This is the largest natural products expo in the world with over 3,000 vendors, and thousands of people wandering through sampling the various products. It is a nice reminder that behind every product is a group of people that are passionate about their product(s).

Some pharmaceutical highlights for me:

TOE FUNGUS TREATMENT

Toe fungus causes the toe to become thick and yellow and just not pretty. To treat with pharmaceuticals, the best option is a drug called terbinafine (Lamisil) which should be taken by mouth daily for one week a month for three months. Side effects of Lamisil? As with all antifungal drugs, has the potential to cause liver problems. In some rare cases Lamisil has caused liver failure. It has also been linked to very severe skin reactions called Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. So this very toxic medication will travel through the body and affect all organ systems in the body – just to treat a fungal infection in the toe? And may cause liver failure. Really?

There must be a better way . . . I saw a new product called Citrusway – an all natural product with citrus extract that has helped clear up “even the worst cases of fingernail fungus” within 8 weeks!

LICE

Lice is often a problem in school age children, and is treated with toxic pesticides permethrin and pyrethrin. I’ve been gradually switching over to products that are natural, non-toxic. I have non-toxic skin products from Optimal Health Institute, and TKO Orange for cleaning my kitchen, bathroom, tile floors, and carpet stains. Also I use Tom’s natural toothpaste. Now I have a few samples of natural cleaning products to use for laundry soap, and samples of Jane Carter’s Solution for the hair.
